Yesterday, I spent some time going around in circles talking about services, today I want to introduce you to Indigo, Microsoft's new programming model for doing service oriented development. It will ship with Longhorn, so the official story is 2006, but in the meantime you can get your hands on Community Technology Preview and (any day now, so I believe Beta Releases (The beta is currently at Release Candidate, although there's an oxymoron - a beta release candidate). So enough background - let's look at some code. You may have guessed with my focus yesterday, that I believe the best way to code up services is by defining the contract first, and that is the Indigo preferred method as well. Attributes are provided in the System.ServiceModel namespace that allow you to decorate an interface (that's right - the interface, Indigo gives you mechanisms to annotate an implementation class as the contract, but don't do it, not ever, not even as a quick test, just avoid the temptation to do code-first service development). So here we go, a service for placing orders may be described as follows

A couple of things here - the ServiceContract exposes the interface as a Service, and the OperationContract basically lists the operations that will be exposed in the WSDL in the portType section. Unlike asmx, this service does not necessarily have to be bound to SOAP over HTTP, and we'll see how we specify the binding some other time. The second thing should blow you away, I am specifying a duplex service, other clients must provide a PlaceOrderCompleted service in order to use my service, as a colleague of mine might say - "this is way cool". Those of you familiar with the asmx implementation will know that Order instances will be serialized into XML by the XMLSerializer, here is one of Indigos neat features (and one that will be available in the .NET 2.0 framework, yippee), the ability to create a versioned data contract (much more on this on another occasion) and serialize this to XML using an XMLFormatter, so the data contract for the Order class might be specified as follows:

Can I hear the big hurrah at the back? At last the ability to serialize private fields. You'll have to wait till tomorrow to write the service implementation, which in Indigo terminology we call the ServiceType, as it's getting late and the bar is calling.

Energy and Asset Technology is currently in negotiations with land and business
owners in New Zealand, Greece and Malaysia regarding the purchase of their popular
and profitable fast growing infant tree plants. Inquiries from the governments of
